Suspended Solids
Suspended solids are particles of solid material in suspension in water. Larger particles, such as sand (>100 microns), fall out of suspension quite readily, whereas smaller particles take more time to fall under gravity. The very smallest particles (<5 microns), such as ground limestone and clay can be colloidal and remain in suspension.
The Probem
Suspended solids in the environment can be unsightly, as they settle out in the oceans and smother marine life. If discharged into the sewer network, they can cause problems for the waste water treatment plants.
The Treatment
Solids are removed in a number of different ways, depending upon the particle size and loading. Large particles fall out of suspension in lagoons or break tanks; smaller particles can be removed using centrifugation, clarifiers or using chemical coagulants. If the loading is not high, Media or Disc, Bag or Cartridge Filters can be used, as well as Ultrafiltration methods. If the problem is not easily treated on shore, Silt Curtains can be deployed to restrict the environmental impact in the ocean.
Our Capability
The system choice for solids filtration is critical and depends upon the particle size, density and the quantity (loading) in the waste stream. ACTION work closely with laboratories to understand the particle size and total amount of solids in a sample and provide the most effective and cost economical method for removal. For short term projects, ACTION have a rental fleet for TSS removal, comprising Advanced Lamellae Clarifiers, Bag Filters and Disc Filters.
