Groundwater Remediation

Following many years of poorly regulated environmental laws, there are a number of existing environmental issues throughout the regions countries. One of the least visible is the issue of groundwater contamination. This generally comes to light when a planned construction project drills exploratory boreholes and takes water samples, or when excavations encounter groundwater.

Hydrocarbon Contamination

Hydrocarbon contamination is prevalent, both from long term underground storage tanks leaks, through to large  point spillages that have soaked into the ground.

Very often a layer of oil is found floating on top of the groundwater. This free phase layer can be anything from a thin film of oil, to a layer many centimetres to many metres thick. If hydrocarbons have been in contact with the water for some time, certain elements dissolve, giving rise to dissolved phase hydrocarbons.

Free phase oil can be removed directly using oil skimmers or oil selective pumps. Dissolved phase may be treated in situ, or the water may be pumped out and treated prior to discharge.
